Bandaranayake College Media Unit - 88 Years of Excellence in Announcing, Technical Services, and Event Coverage.
The media unit of Gampaha Bandaranayake College has done a valuable contribution to improve the media literacy of students. Our media unit first started off on the 11th of July 1936. We were able to mark history by starting the first ever radio channel broadcasted by a school media unit named 'Siyane Sara' in 1993. Our media unit was also able to take the next massive leap in the school media culture, by telecasting the 'Siyane Roo' TV channel in association with X-Ban 2008. We were able to broadcast the 'Siyane Roo' TV channel to the whole of Sri Lanka, during the X Ban exhibitions of 2013 and 2018. Through these broadcasts, we were able to reach the milestone of being the most successful TV channel done by a school media unit in history.
First started as a news unit back in 1936, our media unit has gone through many changes throughout its history. Afterwards, our media unit was able to take a new step in school media by starting a newspaper society in 1943. Further, we were able to commence 'Siyena Sara' the radio channel and we were able to broadcast the 'Siyane Sara' radio channel in association with the X-Ban exhibition held in the years 1999, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018. Another important step in our expansion was the broadcast of Siyena Roo television channel which became one of the most watched TV channels in the sub-channels category of Peo TV. The legacy of our media unit has now expanded to various forms of digital platforms such as social media and even an application software named BCMU.
The media unit of Gampaha Bandaranayake College covered many historical events. We covered all X-ban exhibitions of the years 1999, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2018 through the Siyena Sara radio channel. Further, we covered all the X-Ban exhibitions of the years 2008, 2013 and 2018 through the Siyena Roo TV channel. We marked history through the 2018 Interhouse sports meet live program which is considered as the most successful live program broadcasted by a school media unit.
